A recent exclusive media event hosted by BMW India sent ripples through the luxury car segment. The unveiling of the all-new 2025 5 Series LWB marked a significant milestone for the Bavarian carmaker. This launch completes their sedan portfolio, with long-wheelbase variants now available across the board. India holds a unique distinction — the first right-hand drive market globally to receive this iteration of the 5 Series, highlighting the country’s growing importance in the luxury car landscape.
A Familiar Silhouette, Evolved
Codenamed G68, the new 5 Series represents a thoughtful design evolution. Unlike the radical aesthetic shift seen in its larger sibling, the 7 Series, the new 5 Series retains the classic silhouette that has defined the model for generations. This approach offers a sense of familiarity to existing BMW enthusiasts, while the subtle yet purposeful modernisations ensure the car stays relevant in today’s market.
The signature kidney grille takes centre stage, boasting a noticeable increase in size. Illumination of the surrounding area adds a touch of modern flair, and the integrated front parking camera speaks of the car’s technological advancements. Champagne gold accents throughout the grille add a touch of elegance, while the front bumper gains a more muscular look. Functional air ducts that open and close based on engine requirements improve engine performance as well as aerodynamic efficiency.
Extended Elegance: The Long Wheelbase Makes its Presence Known
Moving to the side profile, the most striking change lies in the extended wheelbase. A substantial 130mm longer than the standard model, the LWB designation becomes immediately apparent. This alteration translates into a significant increase in rear passenger legroom, a feature that will undoubtedly be a major selling point for those prioritising comfort in a luxury saloon. The iconic Hofmeister Kink, a design element instantly recognisable to BMW aficionados, remains a prominent feature. The “5” badge, a hallmark of the 5 Series, graces the side of the car. Interestingly, while the Chinese market sees this badge illuminated, Indian regulations necessitate a white finish instead.
A Technological Oasis in the Cabin
Stepping inside the new 5 Series LWB is akin to entering a technological haven. The most striking element is the expansive BMW Curved Display, a signature feature now found across the BMW range. This curved panel integrates a massive 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system alongside a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The instrument cluster features a small cutout that houses infrared cameras and sensors for driver-attention detection, a crucial component of the new 5 Series’ advanced Level-1 ADAS suite.
The redesigned centre console boasts a focus on functionality and aesthetics. Two wireless charging pads ensure smartphones stay juiced up on the go, while a sleek control panel consolidates all physical controls within a single unit. This includes the crystal gear selector and engine start/stop button, adding a touch of luxury to the everyday driving experience. Notably, while most functionalities, including the HVAC controls, can be accessed through the touchscreen interface, the volume scroller remains conveniently located on the control panel for those who prefer a physical knob. Exquisite and highly customisable ambient lighting bathes the cabin in a warm glow, adding another layer of sophistication and personalisation to the interior experience.
Rear Seat Retreat: Comfort Reigns Supreme
The true test of a luxury saloon lies in the comfort it offers its rear passengers, and the new 5 Series LWB excels in this regard. The extended wheelbase translates into a significant increase in legroom, immediately apparent upon entering the rear seats. Large doors and a wide opening ensure easy ingress and egress, even for taller passengers. BMW’s focus on rear seat comfort is evident in every detail. Plush seats with a perfect recline angle offer exceptional support, while ample cushioning and supportive side bolsters ensure a fatigue-free journey. Comfortable headrests complete the picture of rear-seat luxury.
Compared to the previous model, the rear seating in the new 5 Series LWB feels demonstrably more luxurious, a transformation that is sure to please those who prioritise passenger comfort. Rear passengers also benefit from a dedicated touch display for the four-zone climate control system, allowing them to personalise their comfort settings. Additionally, B-pillar-mounted AC vents ensure a constant stream of cool air throughout the rear cabin.
A New Contender in the Luxury Saloon Arena
Traditionally, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB has been the undisputed champion in terms of rear-seat comfort, while the BMW 5 Series catered more towards a sporty driving experience. However, with the introduction of the new 5 Series LWB, BMW seems intent on challenging this perception. The extensive focus on rear seat comfort, coupled with the car’s luxurious appointments and technological advancements, positions the new 5 Series LWB as a serious contender for the title of the best executive luxury sedan. BMW will announce the price and specifications of the 2025 5 Series LWB on July 24 alongside a range of new products under the BMW Group umbrella.
