Ford Motor Co. is set to recall 20,484 hybrid SUVs over concerns linked to potential battery defects, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Tuesday. The recall affects certain models of the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair crossover SUVs manufactured between 2020 and 2024.
According to the NHTSA, the issue stems from a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery cells, which could lead to an internal short circuit, potentially causing battery failure. While no specific incidents have been linked to this defect, the safety regulator emphasised the importance of addressing the issue promptly to mitigate risks.
To resolve the problem, Ford dealerships will conduct a software update for the battery energy control module. Additionally, they will inspect and replace the high-voltage battery pack in affected vehicles as necessary. Both services will be provided to customers free of charge.
This recall highlights the growing challenges automakers face as they scale up production of electric and hybrid vehicles.
