In a bid to advance sustainable mobility in India, MG Motor India and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) have announced a strategic partnership to bolster the country’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The collaboration aims to install 50kW and 60kW DC fast chargers at strategic locations across highways and cities, significantly enhancing the convenience for EV users during long-distance and intercity travel.
Expansion of charging infrastructure
Under this partnership, MG and HPCL will focus on the deployment of fast chargers compatible with the CCS 2 charging standard. This standard is used by several EVs, including the MG ZS EV, ensuring broad compatibility. The new charging stations will be accessible to MG customers via the MyMG App and integrated with HPCL’s network discovery tool, providing a seamless user experience.
Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at MG Motor India, emphasised the importance of a robust EV ecosystem for the successful transition to electric mobility. “MG has been at the forefront of developing a strong EV ecosystem. Our partnership with HPCL is another step in expanding the EV charging infrastructure in India, enhancing customer confidence in EVs,” Gupta stated.
HPCL’s nationwide network
HPCL’s extensive network of over 22,000 fuel stations will play a crucial role in this initiative. Shri Rajdip Ghosh, Chief General Manager of Highway Retailing at HPCL, highlighted the company’s commitment to a sustainable future through the provision of green fuels. “HPCL aims to install 5,000 electric vehicle charging stations by December 2024. This partnership with MG Motor India will leverage MG’s vehicle base to increase the utilisation of chargers across India,” Ghosh remarked.
Enhancing customer experience
The partnership also aims to improve the customer experience by analysing charger usage and strategically expanding the EV charging infrastructure. Users of the charging stations will benefit from loyalty rewards and exclusive promotions, encouraging the adoption of electric mobility.
MG Motor India’s EV initiatives
MG Motor India has been proactive in developing a comprehensive EV ecosystem. Prior to the launch of their fully-electric internet SUV, the MG ZS EV, the company established a strong charging infrastructure. This includes more than 15,000 charging touchpoints nationwide, encompassing public and home chargers through collaborations with ecosystem partners like Tata Power, Delta Electronics, and Fortum.
Additionally, MG has partnered with BPCL and Jio-BP to set up charging stations at various locations across India. The company has also engaged with firms such as Exicom, Tata Power, ATTERO, UMICORE, TES AMM SUPER, and LOHUM for the recycling and second-life use of EV batteries. Recently, MG Motor India signed significant partnerships with Adani TotalEnergies E-Mobility to establish CC2 60 kW DC chargers at upcoming MG dealerships, further strengthening the charging network.
