Swedish luxury vehicle manufacturer Volvo Cars has reported a 10% year-on-year growth in the month of January with global sales reaching 53,402 units. With this, the company observed its 17th month of consecutive growth thanks to a 40% jump in fully electric models in Europe. Sales of the company’s Recharge models with a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain reached 19,171 units last month, accounting for 36% of all cars sold globally, while the share of fully electric cars was at 17%.
In Europe, which is the group’s biggest market, sales grew 8% when compared to January of 2023, reaching 23,141 sold cars. The Recharge lineup accounted for 60% of all cars sold in the region during the month while the share of fully electric cars reached 32%. The sale of Recharge models jumped 8% in the region as compared to last year. However, there was a 15% dip in the sales of plug-in hybrid models at 6,359 units as compared to 7,483 units sold in the year-ago period.
In China, sales reached 16,042 units, an increase of 36% compared to the same period last year while sales of Recharge cars accounted for 989 units, witnessing a dip of 21% when compared to the same period last year. Sales of fully electric models also saw a dip of 50% at 161 units as compared to 319 units sold in the year-ago period.
In the United States, overall sales reached 7,716 units, with Recharge cars accounting for 24% of all cars sold during the period. Sales of fully electric models dipped 66% at 260 units as compared to 771 units sold in the year-ago period. Recharge models overall saw a dip of 21% at 1,875 units as against 2,370 units sold in January of 2023.
Volvo XC60 became the top-selling model last month with sales reaching 18,011 units as compared to 16,016 cars sold in 2023. The second-best was the XC40 with total sales of 12,628 cars as compared to 14,038 cars sold in the year-ago period. The XC90 sales were at 8,167 cars as against 7,438 units sold in the corresponding month of the previous year.
