Hilux goes hybrid
The latest offering from the house of Toyota to undergo the hybrid transplant is the Hilux pick-up. The new Hilux 48V hybrid, as the name suggests is a mild-hybrid system, unlike other strong hybrid models. The introduction of the 48V mild-hybrid reinforces Toyota’s belief in multi pathway approach towards the pursuit of carbon neutrality.
It continues to come with a 2.8L turbo diesel engine that produces 204PS of power and 500Nm of torque between 1600rpm and 2800rpm. Thanks to the 48V hybrid system, the engine gains an electric motor-generator that offers 16PS of power and 65Nm of torque as and when required. The motor-generator draws power from a 48V battery pack, which sits under the rear seats and weighs 7.6kg.
In addition to the enhanced performance, the powertrain also benefits the driver with enhanced braking performance — thanks to regenerative braking that feeds power to the battery while deceleration. Furthermore, the mild-hybrid powertrain claims to offer 5 per cent better efficiency than the regular diesel powertrain.
The addition of the mild-hybrid powertrain doesn’t take a toll on the off-road capabilities of the Hilux pick-up. The truck continues to offer 700mm water wading capacity, thanks to the waterproofing of the battery pack. In addition, the engine idling rpm has been reduced from 720rpm to 600rpm thus enabling superior control over the vehicle from the get-go. The updated Hilux also features a Multi-terrain Select system, offering 5 modes to choose from — Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow or Rock.
Toyota will offer the 48V diesel hybrid powertrain with the dual-cab configuration. Prospective buyers will get to choose between the Invincible and Invincible X variants mated to a standard 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The 48V hybrid variants of the Hilux will offer a three-dimensional grille and front bumper, making it stand out from the rest of the variants.
