Spain’s Industry Minister, Jordi Hereu, expressed optimism on Monday regarding Stellantis’ plan to construct a battery factory in the country, hinting at potential positive developments.

During an event in Barcelona, Minister Hereu conveyed his expectation of receiving “good news” regarding Stellantis’ proposed battery factory project in Spain. He hinted at forthcoming developments in response to questions about the carmaker’s intentions.

Government support

The Spanish government plans to initiate a bidding process where companies will vie for grants and loans earmarked for specific projects, including Stellantis’ battery factory endeavour. Hereu expressed confidence in the process, indicating that he anticipates favourable outcomes.

Conditional plan

Stellantis’ Chief Executive, Carlos Tavares, previously stated the carmaker’s intention to establish a battery factory in Spain, contingent upon securing government subsidies. The viability of the project hinges on obtaining financial support from the government.

Spain allocated 59 million euros last year towards Stellantis’ battery plant project near Zaragoza, as part of its efforts to bolster the electric vehicle and battery industry. This funding was facilitated through the government’s aid programme, utilising funds from the European Union’s pandemic relief initiative.

Minister Hereu disclosed plans for additional rounds of financial assistance to support projects like Stellantis’ battery factory. The upcoming aid package includes 200 million euros in grants and 100 million euros in loans, with a further round of funding worth 1.25 billion euros scheduled for the second half of the year.
