Ford Motor Company has announced a recall for manual-equipped Mustangs produced for the 2024 model year, citing a critical issue with the clutch pressure line. This problem affects vehicles manufactured between September 27, 2022, and May 23, 2024, and poses a potential fire hazard. The recall involves 8,161 Mustang GT and Mustang Dark Horse vehicles, highlighting a significant concern for the renowned automaker.
The issue at hand
Ford’s investigation revealed that the clutch pressure line might be improperly retained to the firewall stud, leading to contact with exhaust components. This contact could result in the clutch pressure line melting, causing a brake fluid leak and potentially an inability to change gears. While Ford assures that a leaking clutch pressure line won’t impact the brake system, the possibility of an underhood fire cannot be ruled out.
Root cause of the problem
The detailed report indicates that a barrel nut may have been improperly installed or entirely missed during assembly. This oversight allows the clutch pressure line to come into contact with exhaust components, increasing the risk of fire. Ford initiated the investigation on April 30 after receiving two reports of underhood fire allegations. Subsequently, another report of underhood smoke surfaced, prompting further scrutiny.
Supplier and part numbers
The affected clutch master cylinder to save cylinder tube assembly is produced by FTE Mexicana of Puebla, with part numbers PR33-7K590-AC and PR33-7K590-DC. This component’s improper installation has led to the current recall, underscoring the importance of quality control in the manufacturing process.
Dealer and owner notifications
Ford has already instructed dealers nationwide to inspect the recalled vehicles for proper clutch pressure line retention. If necessary, the clutch pressure line will be replaced at no cost to the customer. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed between June 17, 2024, and June 21, 2024, ensuring that affected Mustang owners are informed promptly.
Impact on Mustang models
The recall specifically targets the Mustang GT and Mustang Dark Horse models. The standard 2.3-litre EcoBoost model, which is automatic-only for 2024, is not affected. The GT and Dark Horse models, equipped with two distinct manual transmissions, are the focus of this recall. The GT uses a Getrag transmission, while the Dark Horse features a Tremec transmission, enhancing its performance capabilities.
Pricing and specifications
For the 2024 model year, the Mustang EcoBoost starts at $30,920, excluding destination charges and options. The GT fastback is priced at $42,460, with a convertible option available only in the better-equipped Premium grade. The Dark Horse, known for its superior performance, starts at $58,935. Unlike the Shelby GT350 from the S550 generation, the Dark Horse cannot be had with a convertible top, maintaining its focus on performance.
Performance differences
While the GT and Dark Horse may appear similar on paper, numerous small changes make the Dark Horse a superior driver’s car. The Dark Horse’s dual-throttle-body V8 engine, benefitting from S550-gen Shelby GT500 technology, produces 500 horsepower, compared to the GT’s 480 horsepower. Both models offer peak torque of 418 pound-feet with the optional active-valve exhaust, ensuring impressive performance.
Future developments
Looking ahead, the S650 series will soon introduce the Mustang GTD, an 800-plus-horsepower model currently being tested at the Nurburgring. This model aims to lap the challenging circuit in under 7 minutes, potentially becoming the fastest Mustang at the Green Hell. As of June 2024, the fastest Mustang at the Nurburgring is the S550-gen Mach 1, with a lap time of 7:58.29.
