Ford Motor (F.N) announced on Monday an expanded partnership with Tesla, revealing plans to increase the number of Tesla’s Superchargers integrated into its electric-vehicle (EV) charging network. The decision to further embrace Tesla’s extensive charging infrastructure underscores automakers’ efforts to leverage the EV giant’s charger network to extend the driving range of their electric cars.
More superchargers than initially projected
Ford’s updated commitment involves the addition of over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers to its network. This figure surpasses the company’s earlier estimate of 12,000 chargers. This substantial increase reflects the growing collaboration between established automakers and the EV leader.
Substantial growth in charging network
Ford also revealed its intention to expand its BlueOval Charge Network in North America, aiming to achieve a total of over 106,000 charging points. This expansion represents a 25% growth in the number of charging stations. This move acknowledges the persistent concern among potential EV owners regarding access to charging infrastructure, a key consideration when purchasing a battery-powered vehicle.
Access to multiple charging providers
Ford’s commitment to enhancing its charging network also brings good news for its customers. The company disclosed that customers will gain access to three new charging providers: Francis Energy, Blink, and Red E, extending their reach across the United States and Canada. The inclusion of these providers will contribute over 10,000 new charging points, including more than 550 new DC fast chargers.
Fast charging options
Although specific pricing details were not provided, Ford emphasized that the fast chargers, capable of adding hundreds of miles of driving range within an hour or less, will become available to Ford EV customers through an adapter starting in the next spring. This development aims to address one of the common concerns among EV users: fast and convenient access to charging infrastructure.
BlueOval charge network
The BlueOval Charge Network distinguishes itself by combining multiple charging networks, offering access to the most extensive public charging network in North America provided by automotive manufacturers. This network encompasses various providers, including Shell Recharge Solutions, Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint.
Ford’s collaboration with Tesla
This expanded partnership comes several months after Ford entered into an agreement with Tesla. As part of this collaboration, Ford’s EV owners will gain access to the largest network of high-speed Superchargers in the United States, beginning in early 2024. This alliance not only enhances the charging convenience for Ford’s EV customers but also signifies Ford as the first major automaker to adopt Tesla’s proprietary charging standard, showcasing an industry-wide transition towards greater EV interoperability.
