BYD, which is called Build Your Dreams, has been approved to test its Level-3 autonomous driving tech on the high-speed roads of China. This marks a significant milestone for BYD, as the company had already secured the first such license in China back in July.
The Level-3 autonomous driving license allows vehicles to operate with a higher level of automation, where the vehicle can handle most driving tasks independently but may require human intervention in certain situations. This capability opens up new possibilities for the automotive industry, paving the way for safer and more efficient transportation systems.
In a statement posted on its official Weibo account, BYD expressed its commitment to advancing autonomous driving technology. The company sees this achievement as a testament to its dedication to innovation and staying at the forefront of the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
BYD is not alone in its pursuit of Level-3 autonomous driving capabilities. In December, BMW Group announced that it had also received a test license for Level-3 self-driving on high-speed roads in Shanghai. Similarly, Mercedes Benz revealed plans to conduct Level-3 tests on designated highways in Beijing. What’s unique to Mercedes-Benz’s test is the use of turquoise lights around the vehicle lit up when the vehicle is driven on autonomous mode, communicating to its surroundings.
The automotive industry’s push toward Level-3 autonomy reflects a broader global trend, with major players investing heavily in research and development to bring advanced autonomous features to market.
BYD is among the largest EV makers across the globe and has also recently overtaken market-leader Tesla in terms of popularity, reveals a latest media report. The imminent overtaking of Tesla in EV sales signifies a turning point and reflects the evolving competitive dynamics. BYD offers a variety of higher-volume models at a significantly lower cost than Tesla, widening its appeal to a broader consumer base.
