The significance of our engineers in achieving climate goals and the role they will play is going to be crucial in achieving the vision of ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India).
The country’s rich engineering heritage has made significant contributions on the global stage. India’s engineering prowess has been witnessed by the world with the recent success of Chandrayan-3 lunar exploration mission. Engineers are the driving force behind progress in various fields, from renewable energy to smart cities. Their contributions have a profound impact on the quality of life for people around the world.
Engineers Leading the Charge
Today, it isn’t a matter of buying just a vehicle, or a mode of commute – decisions are being taken based on the fast-expanding scope of integration of auto-tech features offered by brands. ‘Connected Vehicles’ of varying levels are at play. Technologies like smart connected features are redefining the new-age automobiles. Hence, a well-packaged product that brings to the table sustainability, performance, connected features, and affordability is a must to hold a potential customer’s interest.
Engineers have always been problem-solvers and innovators. They are the architects of the modern world, responsible for designing, developing, and implementing solutions to complex challenges. Today, one of the most pressing global challenge is climate change, and engineers are contributing towards mitigating its impact.
Sustainable Agenda
One of the most significant environmental issues is the emission of greenhouse gases from the transportation sector. India’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2070 spurs interest in New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) like, Hydrogen Fuel Cells, Electric Vehicles (EVs), among other options. ‘Auto Expo 2023’ showcased a futuristic emphasis among OEMs on Green Energy-powered vehicles.
India has set ambitious goals for the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). By 2030, India aims to achieve a 30% penetration of private cars and 80% of 2 & 3-wheelers being electric. This commitment to electric mobility is driven by the need to reduce carbon emissions and combat air pollution. Engineers are at the forefront of this transition, developing new technologies and infrastructure to support the widespread adoption of EVs.
Collaborative Approach
Achieving sustainability goals requires a collaborative approach. Working in isolation doesn’t help, but a broader ecosystem that includes government agencies, businesses, academia, and society can collectively bring that change. This synergy is crucial for developing and implementing sustainable solutions. The government’s initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles (FAME) are key drivers of the electric vehicle revolution in India.
The PLI scheme offers financial incentives to manufacturers to boost domestic production, which is critical for reducing the cost of EVs and making them more accessible to the masses. FAME, on the other hand, provides incentives to consumers to promote the adoption of electric vehicles. These initiatives, combined with the expertise of engineers, are accelerating the shift towards sustainable mobility.
Electric Vehicles: The Future
Electric vehicles have emerged as a promising solution to reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector. India’s electric vehicle segment has been witnessing remarkable growth, with consistent monthly sales surpassing the 100,000-unit mark in the first half of CY-2023, according to government estimates.
This surge in electric vehicle adoption, apart from the support of government policies, also the ingenuity of engineers who have been working tirelessly to improve the technology. Engineers are constantly innovating to enhance battery efficiency, charging infrastructure, and overall performance of EVs. Their efforts are making electric vehicles more affordable, reliable, and convenient for consumers.
India has produced some of the finest engineers. It is essential to nurture and support the next generation of engineers to continue this legacy of excellence.
