A recent collision involving a driverless Waymo vehicle and a cyclist in San Francisco has prompted regulatory scrutiny, highlighting ongoing concerns surrounding autonomous driving technology. The incident, which resulted in minor injuries to the cyclist, is currently under review by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), as per media reports.
According to Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous driving unit, the collision occurred on Tuesday at a four-way intersection. The company stated that its vehicle was stationary at the intersection, but as a large truck turned, the Waymo car proceeded forward. Unfortunately, the cyclist, who was positioned behind the truck, was not visible to the autonomous vehicle until it was too late to avoid a collision, despite heavy braking.
Following the incident, Waymo promptly notified the authorities and cooperated with the investigation. The San Francisco Police Department confirmed their ongoing inquiry into the cause of the collision. Additionally, the San Francisco Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting the incident, although the cyclist did not require hospitalisation.
This accident comes amid Waymo’s efforts to expand its driverless service in Los Angeles, where it is conducting limited testing with new rides available only by invitation. However, such endeavours have encountered opposition from lawmakers and citizens who express concerns about the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles.
The incident with Waymo’s robotaxi echoes similar controversies surrounding other autonomous driving initiatives, including General Motors’ Cruise self-driving car unit. Last month, Cruise faced federal investigations following an accident involving one of its robotaxis, reigniting debates about the safety protocols and regulatory oversight of self-driving technology.
In response to these incidents, various unions and safety advocates have called for industry-wide probes into driverless vehicles, citing a significant number of crash incidents and questioning their current level of safety and viability.
As investigations into the Waymo collision continue, it underscores the complex challenges facing the integration of autonomous driving technology into transportation systems, raising important questions about regulation, safety standards, and public acceptance.
