Mercedes-AMG has taken the wraps off the most powerful SL model ever. Thanks to its advanced hybrid powertrain, it offers combined power and torque output of 816PS and 1420Nm, respectively. The powertrain uses a 204PS electric motor, which sits at the rear axle and uses a 2-speed gearbox. As a result, the SL 63 S E Performance is capable of sprinting from 0-100kmph in 2.9 seconds.
The AMG’s E Performance tech is inspired by the Formula 1 hybrid powertrain. It uses an ultra-dense and lightweight battery pack, which incorporates 560 cells and boasts a capacity of 6.1kWh. The battery pack also features a 3.7kW onboard charger and can deliver an electric-only range of 13km on a single charge.
The system also offers four stages of energy recuperation, which uses energy regenerative braking to recharge the battery. In the most aggressive mode, the system can feed up to 100kW to the battery.
Since it is the high-performance E Performance version, it surely carries an “S E Performance” badge at the rear. In addition, the SL 63 AMG S E Performance also features a charging flap and “E Performance” badging on the fenders. It runs on 20-inch wheels as standard and customers can also opt for 21-inch lightweight alloy wheels.
To optimise performance and efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has also retuned the active aerodynamic systems in the SL 63 S E Performance. To begin with, it features a deployable aerodynamic element, which sits hidden at the front and extends by 40mm at speeds above 80kmph. Another aerodynamic component is the extendable rear spoiler, which deploys above 80kmph and adopts five angular positions, to benefit efficiency or driving stability.
Since the S E Performance serves as the flagship model in the SL range, it comes packed with standard features like active rear-axle steering, AMG Adaptive Ride Control, and semi-active roll stabilisation. The MBUX system also adds the hybrid performance display, offering the live telemetry of power channelling from the engine and hybrid system.
